  • A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) provides protection by interrupting the flow of electrical current when it senses an electrical ground fault.

  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) must be used for all new/replacement outlets in bathrooms, kitchens (within 1 meter of the sink), and exterior outlets.

  • A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) should be tested monthly to ensure proper functioning.

Safety Tips

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) provide almost instant protection by interrupting the flow of electrical current when it senses an electrical ground fault.

  1. GFCI protected outlets should be used where you are most vulnerable:
    • when working outdoors – exterior outlets.
    • in all bathrooms.
    • within 1 meter of your kitchen sink.

  2. A licensed electrical contractor should be contacted if you have a home without GFCI protected outlets to define your requirements.

  3. A licensed electrical contractor should be used to connect a GFCI outlet to a standard outlet to ensure proper connection and functionality.

  4. GFCI protected outlets do not always mean that you are protected – outlets should be tested monthly to ensure they are properly working.

  5. Consider purchasing portable GFCI protection – plug ins or extension cords to protect you and your family when working outdoors.
test Your GFCI
  • Push the “Reset” button on the GFCI receptacle to prepare the unit for testing

  • Plug in a small nightlight and turn it on.

  • Push the “Test” button on the GFCI receptacle. The light should go OFF

  • Push the “Reset” button again, and the light should go ON.
  1. If the light remains on when the “Test” button is pushed, either the GFCI is not working properly or has not been correctly installed.

  2. If the “Reset” button pops out but the light does not go out, the GFCI has been improperly wired and does not offer shock protection at that wall outlet.
