Every province across Canada has regulations that determine the requirements and standards for safe electrical installations.

In Ontario, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, which is produced by the Electrical Safety Authority, defines the requirements.

To ensure safe electrical installations at work and at home it is important to learn the requirements for safe electrical installations and to hire a licensed electrical contractor or certified electrician who can ensure safe electrical installations.

Partners Defining Safety Requirements:

ESA – develops the Ontario Electrical Safety Code which defines the requirements for safe electrical installations in Ontario and provides electrical inspection services to ensure compliance.

Hydro One Networks – provides electrical safety tips.

Electrical Contractors and their Associations (ECAO/IBEW/OEL) – endorse the use of qualified electrical contractors and certified electricians for electrical installations.

Electrical Inspectors – provide inspection services to ensure electrical installations meet the requirements of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

This electrical safety checklist has been developed to save you time, money, and to reduce potential risks of shock and fire hazards.

  • research and plan your electrical project carefully—ensure you have received good and accurate advice from a licensed and knowledgeable electrical contractor.
  • ensure you understand your home’s electrical requirements; consult a licensed and knowledgeable contractor if you are not aware of your these requirements.
  • if you need help doing electrical work hire a licensed electrical contractor.
  • check that all electrical materials and equipment have been approved by a recognized certification agency. (These include: CSA, cUL, ULC, ETL, cMET, Entela, O-TL, Warnock Hersey, TUV Rheinland)
  • carefully read all manufacturer’s instructions.
  • shut power off from the panel box, and be sure to use an approved tester prior to touching or connecting electrical wires or components.
  • call the Electrical Safety Authority at (1-877-esa-safe) to arrange for an inspection of any electrical work you are doing.

Finding the right electrical contractor or electrician
Ask your contractor the following questions:

  • Do you have a valid electrical contractor’s license?
  • Are you a certified electrician, and are your apprentices registered?
  • Do you have liability insurance?
  • Can you guarantee that all electrical materials and equipment has been approved by a recognized certification agency?
  • Will you provide me with the "Certificate of Inspection" from the Electrical Safety Authority when all work has been completed?
